The University has recently become aware of a number of unacceptable comments from students on websites such as Facebook and MySpace. It is widely recognised that these websites are a great way to keep in touch and share views with friends and that students have every right to make legitimate comments. It should be noted, however, that derogatory and offensive comments about Keele staff will be taken very seriously by the University and could lead to disciplinary action against the student(s) concerned. Students may also face legal action from the members of staff concerned for defamation and harassment. A number of students have already been written to by the University warning them of the unacceptable nature of their comments on Facebook and that any futher activity of a similar nature will be dealt with severely. Please note that there are legitimate ways to express dissatisfaction with the student experience without resorting to such communications. A code of practice on the use of these websites is currently being developed and will be circulated shortly. The Conditions of Use for Keele Computing and Information Systems has a section on what constitutes 'Unacceptable Use' that could lead to disciplinary action by the University and can be found online at: http://www.keele.ac.uk/depts/cc/documents/conditions.htm Fiona Dumbelton Secretariat Manager Keele University Staffordshire ST5 5BG Tel: 01782 58(3373) f.dumbelton@keele.ac.uk _______________________________________________ All-u mailing list All-u@maillists.keele.ac.uk http://maillists.keele.ac.uk/mailman/listinfo/all-u
